Privacy policy

WattAround is a free tool that suggests and plots outings on light electric vehicles. It is a personal project by Amaury Lesplingart, the data controller under the GDPR. For any question, email bonjour@wattaround.eu.

The principle: no advertising, no trackers, no audience analytics, no profiling, and we never sell your data. We collect only what makes the app work.

Using it without an account

The app works fully without an account. In that case your settings stay in your browser (local storage) and are not sent to the server: vehicle type and battery settings, start point, language, cached routes, trial-route counter. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Your start and destination coordinates only leave your device when you ask for a route: they are then sent to the server for the calculation (see “Recipients”).

If you create an account

Creating an account is optional (it saves and syncs across devices). We then keep:

• your username and email address;
• your password, stored only as a hash (bcrypt), never in clear text;
• your synced settings: vehicle profile, map options, start point (coordinates);
• your saved trips (names you choose and stop coordinates) and the places you mark as done.

You can edit these or delete your account yourself from the “My account” page: deletion erases the account, settings, trips and history.

Location data

If you turn on “Locate me”, your device's GPS position is shown on the map in your browser; it is not stored. The start and destination coordinates you choose are sent to the server to compute a route, a reachable area or an address, and may be forwarded to the geocoding and weather providers listed below.

Technical data

To keep you signed in, a strictly necessary cookie holds your session, with anti-CSRF protection. Like any hosting, our server keeps technical access logs (including IP address) for security. An internal usage log notes the type of action and the date to monitor load, without your IP address or the content of your requests; it is purged after about 120 days.

Cookies

WattAround uses only strictly necessary cookies (sign-in and security). No analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. That is why there is no consent banner: the law does not require one for essential cookies. Your browser's local storage is used to run the app (offline, preferences), not to track you.

Recipients and processors

To function, the app relies on a few services. We never sell or rent your data.

• Komoot (Photon): address search and lookup. Typed addresses and coordinates are sent from our server to get a result.
• Open-Meteo: current wind and weather for coordinates.
• CARTO: map tiles. Tiles are loaded by your browser, which exposes your IP address and the area you view to CARTO.
• Brevo: sends account emails (welcome, password reset). Your email address is processed for this.
• OVHcloud: server hosting.

These providers' policies: CARTO, Komoot, Open-Meteo, Brevo, OVHcloud.

Legal bases

We process your data on the grounds of: performing the service you ask for (account, route calculation); our legitimate interest in securing and maintaining the service (session cookie, logs); and, where relevant, your consent (GPS location, which you turn on).

Retention

• Account and settings: until you delete your account.
• Sign-in token: up to 90 days.
• Password-reset link: 1 hour.
• Usage log: about 120 days.
• Server access logs: per the host's policy.
• Browser local storage: until you clear it.

Your rights

You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection, and can withdraw consent at any time. Many of these are available directly in the app (“My account”: change email or password, delete the account). For anything else, email bonjour@wattaround.eu.

You may also lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority (Rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels — dataprotectionauthority.be).

Security

The site is served over HTTPS and your password is never stored in clear text. No system is perfect, but we keep data to the minimum.

Children

WattAround is not aimed at children. Do not create an account if you are under 16 without a parent or guardian's consent.
