Your battery has a happy place

Nobody buys a light EV thinking about battery chemistry, and then two winters later they're wondering why the range has quietly halved. The pack was never going to last forever, but how fast it fades is largely in your hands, and the habits that keep it healthy are small, cheap and mostly about not doing things. Follow your manufacturer's advice first. What follows is the general shape of a long, happy battery life.

01Live in the middle

A lithium battery is happiest between roughly 20 and 80 percent, and it quietly resents both ends of the scale. Sitting on a full charge stresses it; running it flat stresses it more. So for everyday riding, charging to around 80 or 90 percent and topping up before it gets desperate is kinder than the full-empty-full cycle most people fall into out of habit. Do a complete charge now and then, mostly before a long day out, because it helps the cells balance, but you don't need to chase 100% every single night. That overnight top-up to full is a small tax you pay in lifespan for convenience you don't really need.

02Cold hates it, storage forgives it

Cold and lithium don't get along. In winter the pack hands over less energy while it's cold, so your range dips, and you should never charge a battery that's actually frozen, wait until it's warmed up indoors. If the vehicle is going to sit for weeks, don't leave it full or empty. Park it at around half charge, somewhere cool and dry, and give it a small top-up every couple of months so it doesn't slowly sink into a deep discharge while your back is turned. A battery left flat all winter is often a battery you replace in spring.

03Ride a little softer, get a little further

This one's a bonus, and it's the same physics as the range guide. Speed and hard acceleration drink power out of all proportion, because drag climbs with the square of your speed. A smooth, steady pace won't feel slower by much, but it'll hand you noticeably more kilometres and put less heat and strain through the pack while it's at it.

04What's normal, and what isn't

Some decline is simply the deal. Every battery loses a little capacity each year and after a few hundred charge cycles, and the pack that did 45 km when new settling at 38 after two or three seasons is nothing to worry about. What is worth worrying about is a sudden collapse in range, any swelling of the casing, or a strange smell. Those aren't wear, they're warnings. Stop riding and get it looked at.

Do I really have to stop at 80%?

No, you don't have to do anything. But if you'd like the battery to still be strong in a few years, a daily habit of 80 to 90 percent is measurably gentler than living at 100. Save the full charges for the mornings you've got a big ride planned.

Is it bad to leave it charging overnight?

Modern chargers cut off when the pack is full, so it's not dangerous, but leaving it sitting at 100% for hours isn't doing it any favours either. Unplug it when it's done, especially if it's going into storage, and as a plain safety habit, charge it where you can see it and not on anything that would mind catching fire.

How should I put it away for winter?

Half charged, cool, dry, and checked every couple of months with a small top-up. Keep it away from frost and away from radiators. Both extremes shorten its life; the boring middle is exactly where it wants to be.
